To kick off our World Emoji Day 2025 celebrations ahead of the day itself on July 17, Emojipedia has analyzed which of the emojis approved in 2024 is now most popular, as part of the World Emoji Awards.

A total of eight new emojis were approved by Unicode in 2024 as part of Emoji 16.0:

Since being officially approved on September 10 last year, support for these eight new emoji concepts has been implemented by Apple, Google, Samsung, WhatsApp, and Discord (via its offshoot of the original Twemoji set).

Most Anticipated Emoji Award 2025

Today's announcement is just the first of four award announcements for World Emoji Day 2025. We've three further awards to announce, with one of these being the Most Anticipated Emoji Award.

Unicode is expected to approve the draft candidates for Emoji 17.0 on September 9 of this year, alongside Unicode 17.0.

This isn't part of the approval process; it's just a fun way to gauge which draft emojis people are most keen to use. So get voting, and the winner will be revealed on World Emoji Day (July 17).

As revealed late last year, the Emoji 17.0 draft list contains 164 new emoji recommendations that break down as follows:

Assuming all are approved, Emoji 17.0 will bring the total number of emojis recommended for general interchange (RGI) by Unicode to 3,954.
