Education Icons: Emojis For The Back-To-School Season
As students around the world open their books on a new academic year, they can look to a whole library of emojis to help them talk about their return to the classroom.

Summer’s fizzling out with one final sizzle, and for much of the world, that means more than just the onset of autumn; it means school is back in session.
In today’s digital era, school looks and feels a bit different from how it did in the opening years of the 21st century and before. Seemingly disappearing are the days of analog tools like pen and paper; many students depend heavily on laptops, digital technology, and even, to the chagrin of many teachers and administrators, AI.
But whether you prefer the cutting edge or the old-school, there are plenty of emojis to represent the academic experience for students of all ages and educational inclinations—for the teacher’s pets, the class clowns, or just the “Cs get degrees” students trying to coast by without much commotion.
So zip up your backpacks, sharpen your pencils, hop on the bus, and get the sheen on that apple for the teacher looking extra shiny for this exploration of back-to-school emojis (and don’t worry - there won’t be a pop quiz!).
🎒 School-Centric Emojis
Of course, the best place to start when we’re talking about back-to-school emojis is with the emojis that represent the experience of, well, going to school itself.
The 🏫 School is a classic emoji to represent the physical place where much of the academic experience takes place.

Almost all major vendors’ emojis universally feature a multi-story building with a giant clock on the front. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the usage of this emoji spikes around early September when many students worldwide return to the classroom.
And many students can’t get to school without the dependable daily 🚌 Bus, which across many major vendors largely yellow in color and reminiscent of the stereotypical shade of the American school bus, with some exceptions—namely the emojis of Samsung, Google, and Twitter / X (which is also used on Discord).

No school is complete, of course, without students, which have as their emoji stand-ins the gender-neutral 🧑🎓 Student, the 👩🎓 Woman Student, and the 👨🎓 Man Student.
And just as important to the learning process are the teachers, professors, and other instructors leading the classroom. These people can be represented by the 🧑🏫 Teacher and its gendered variations, the 👩🏫 Woman Teacher and the 👨🏫 Man Teacher. (Don’t forget to bring them a tasty 🍎 Red Apple to make a lasting impression on your first day of class!)
The 🎒 Backpack is an educational must-have for many learners, helping them carry their various textbooks, school supplies, and academic resources. For much of paper-dependent educational history, those might have included mostly stacks of 📚 Books (or their individual constituents, the 📖 Open Book, the 📕 Closed Book, the 📗 Green Book, the 📘 Blue Book, and the 📙 Orange Book, which for some students can represent distinct subjects coded by color).
You’d also be likely to find writing essentials like the classic composition-style 📓 Notebook, the 📔 Notebook with Decorative Cover, or the 🗒️ Spiral Notepad.
Emojis standing in for typical school supplies that have long been part of many students’ personal stashes include the ✏️ Pencil, the 🖊️ Pen, the 🖋️ Fountain Pen and the ✒️ Black Nib (for the penmanship-proud students for whom note-taking is an art form), and the 🖍️ Crayon for the younger students among the world’s learners for whom coloring is in the curriculum.
And on that note, the 📝 Memo, the ✍️ Writing Hand, and the 📋 Clipboard can also represent the act of scribing which is a key part of schooling for many students.
There are also the emojis for quintessential office staples that can double as other assorted school supplies, like the 📎 Paperclip, the ✂️ Scissors, the 📏 Straight Ruler, and the 📐 Triangular Ruler, for example.
With the growing pervasiveness and reach of online learning and electronic - well, everything - in the educational system over the last two decades or so, some of the most canonical and standard analog classroom resources have been replaced in part by digital tools and technologies.
Today, it’s very common for most students to have access to a personal 💻 Laptop or to use a 🖥️ Desktop Computer regularly to complete assignments—or even to attend class, like during the height of the Covid pandemic, when schooling largely took place on the internet. And using a computer wouldn’t be complete without a ⌨️ Keyboard and, for some, a 🖱️ Computer Mouse.
No matter what your preferred learning style is or the type of educational experience you have, there’s an emoji to help you make the grade - and ultimately achieve any student’s dream of walking across the stage in a 🎓 Graduation Cap with a diploma in hand.
🏀 Extracurricular Emojis
Many students find that taking advantage of their school’s extracurricular offerings - like clubs, sports, and artistic activities - can be a fulfilling post-school-day enrichment that adds some extra color, fun, and well-roundedness to what they’re learning in an academic setting. There’s no shortage of emojis to help capture the breadth of their personal endeavors beyond the classroom.
Emojis for sports can represent some of the most popular athletic pursuits students partake in, with ⚽ Soccer, 🏀 Basketball, 🏈 (American) Football, ⚾ Baseball, 🥎 Softball, 🎾 Tennis, 🏐 Volleyball, 🏒 Ice Hockey, 🤼 Wrestling, and 🥍 Lacrosse being just a few examples.
Students who are more artistically inclined have plenty of emojis to talk about their extracurricular interests as well.
Thespians have the 🎭 Performing Arts emoji to help them shine in the spotlight, and music lovers in their schools’ choruses, show choirs, and bands have the 🎼 Musical Score, the 🎵 Musical Note, and the 🎶 Musical Notes as well as emojis for specific instruments like the 🎷 Saxophone, the 🎸 Guitar, the 🎹 Musical Keyboard, the 🎺 Trumpet, and the 🎻 Violin, among several others.
Visual artists might opt for the 🎨 Artist Palette, the 🖼️ Framed Picture, or the 🖌️ Paintbrush, while enthusiasts of more academic-feeling activities and groups like chess club have the ♟️ Chess Pawn to represent their favorite hobbies.
So, whatever this school year brings, emojis can help bring your educational and extracurricular experience to life.
