Lifetime Achievement Award: The πŸ”₯ Fire Emoji

Today, as part of our thirteenth World Emoji Day's World Emoji Awards, we're delighted to announce that the πŸ”₯ Fire emoji is the recipient of our annual Lifetime Achievement Award. It's a fitting choice, as few emojis have burned as consistently bright, for as long, or across as many contexts, as this one.

πŸ”₯ Fire joins an auspicious list of Lifetime Achievement Award recipients:

These aren't obscure or niche picks: they're some of the most-used, most-recognisable emoji on the entire keyboard. And that's exactly the company πŸ”₯ Fire has earned its way into.

Fire isn't a viral flash-in-the-pan: it's been a consistent presence in the globe's top most-used emoji for years now. For example, at the time of writing it's #5 most popular emoji on Emojipedia:

  1. ❀️ Red Heart
  2. βœ… Check Mark Button
  3. ✨ Sparkles
  4. 😭 Loudly Crying Face
  5. πŸ”₯ Fire

Additionally, back in 2023, when we crunched a decade's worth of Twitter data for Emojipedia's 10th anniversary, πŸ”₯ Fire sat in amongst the top 10 most-used emoji worldwide alongside fellow evergreens and Lifetime Achievement Award winners like ❀️ Red Heart and ✨ Sparkles.

According to ten years world of data, it first entered the global top 20 emojis on that platform in September 2017, and has been a constant presence in that list since July 2019.

Editor's Note: there are some oddities in the above chart, most notably with the ♻️ Recycling Symbol and πŸ”Ή Small Blue Diamond emojis. These surged due to bot activity, which has been partially covered elsewhere.

That kind of staying power comes down to range.

Fire has never settled on one meaning: it's the literal warmth of a fireplace or campfire, the "excellent" of lit, the "attractive" of hot, the "performing exceptionally well" of on fire, and the scathing sick burn of a good clapback.

More recently, it's also become something closer to a generic Gen Z stamp of approval, applied to an outfit, a haircut, or a well-edited TikTok with no music-scene specificity required, alongside its role as the engine behind Snapchat's snapstreak and the "keep the flame alive" logic apps like Duolingo have since built entire features around.

For the full history and deep dive into how πŸ”₯ Fire initially built up that range of meaning in the first place, our original 2018 Emojiology on the emoji is still very much worth a read: What Does The πŸ”₯ Fire Emoji Mean?
